Try a range runs your strategy again and again across values you type, and lays the results out in a grid.
How to use it
- Open the strategy's backtests and go to Try a range.
- Pick up to two of your own settings to vary. Each one becomes a side of the grid.
- For each one, type a from, a to and a step.
- The number of runs shows before you start, so the limit is never a surprise.
- Start it. Every box in the grid is a full backtest.
You can vary at most two settings, and run at most 60 boxes. Two settings make a grid you can read. Three would make a cube that is hard to read.
Nothing is marked or ranked
Every number in the grid comes from the range you typed. Nothing is marked or ranked.
Rows arrive in the order of the ranges you typed. You can sort any column by clicking it.
What it refuses
- A setting that is not a number. A list or an on-off switch has no range.
- A range outside the setting's own allowed limits. It is refused, not quietly trimmed, so the grid never shows numbers you did not ask for.
- A range with fractions on a whole-number setting.
- More runs than the limit.
What it needs
Range runs happen on our servers. They come with the Backtest and Bot plans, with no monthly limit. Without one of those plans, Try a range is not available.
What can go wrong
Running many combinations over one stretch of dates and picking the top one is a well-known way to fit a strategy to the past. What you take from the grid is up to you. You can run any value again on dates you did not use to pick it.
